Introduction: A follicular cyst is common odontogenic cyst associated with tooth growth and development. More than 70% of all follicular cyst cases are found in the lower jaw. The mandibular third molars are the most frequently impacted teeth, followed by the maxillary canines, with mandibular premolars being less frequently involved.
Materials and Methods: To create the review article, publications and studies from recent years were reviewed, and the results of the research on the subject were summarized in order to present the main signs and causes of the appearance of follicular cysts, as well as their treatment.
Results: After reviewing all articles and studies, we found that follicular cysts are common, especially in men and patients between 20 and 30 years of age. The clinical finding is grossly insufficient to establish the diagnosis. Additional paraclinical tests (orthopantomogram (OPG), cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), histology) are mandatory.
Conclusion: Due to the high percentage of cases of follicular cysts and the possibility of recurrence or malignancy of the cyst, the diagnosis should be approached with great care without being underestimated.
